‘Well done, Mum, I’m really proud of you,’ said Daisy. Germaine jumped up, putting her front paws against my legs, and panted at me to tell me how proud she was as well. I laughed, patted the dog and kissed my daughter.

‘Thank you. I still can’t believe it. Ravi is such a good baker, I have no idea how I beat him.’

‘Because you’re such a good baker too!’ Daisy said, as ever my biggest cheerleader and supporter.

‘Thank you. So, did you have a nice walk?’ Germaine’s ears pricked up at the ‘w’ word.

‘We didn’t get very far. We ended up eating jelly babies with Sergeant Adams while he told us stories about Grandad.’

I smiled. ‘Aww, that’s lovely. As long as he didn’t tell you any about me.’

Daisy laughed. ‘Oh yes, he did. He told me about the time you and Tony drove his car onto the beach and it got stuck in the sand.’

‘Oh my God, I’d forgotten all about that!’ I said, remembering it as clear as day now. ‘Tony had only just got his licence. He’d been watching this TV show about bodyguards or the CIA or something, how they were taught to drive in all sorts of conditions, and he wanted to try it. He was showing off about how easy it was to drive on the beach, as long as you kept up a certain speed and didn’t stop, otherwise you’d sink. And then he stopped, I can’t remember why, and of course we got stuck. It was hilarious.’ I remembered running up to the police station and begging Sergeant Adams to come and help us, but not tell my dad. Of course, he had told my dad, who had strong words for my old friend, putting his daughter in harm’s way, but I’d never really been in any danger and Dad had just been winding Tony up.

Germaine barked and tugged at the lead in Daisy’s hand. ‘She’s still full of energy,’ said Daisy. ‘Should we take her for a walk here, or wait till we get home?’

‘Let’s do it here,’ I said. ‘Nicer surroundings.’ Daisy eyed me suspiciously.

‘That’s the only reason, is it?’ she said, and I gave her an affronted look.

‘How dare you cast aspersions!’ I said. ‘Now if we head that way, towards the crime scene, it’ll give Germaine a chance to stretch her legs properly…’

We kept Germaine on the lead until we’d cleared the roadshow village of tents and the car park – people were leaving for the day in their cars, and we would too, soon. But past that, out into the grounds proper, I unclicked the lead and let her run off. There was no one around, and we were some way away from the crime scene, so there was no chance of her blundering into it by mistake.

‘What was Nana acting all mysterious about this morning?’ asked Daisy.

‘No idea. You know what she’s like, she does like a bit of drama,’ I said, watching Germaine gambolling along the path ahead of us.
